Electric Melting System was introduced by DU in 2009. In the last 10 years we have over 80 installations all over India .

Following are the advantages of this system:

  • Quick start up independent of factory boiler
  • Precise temperature control in each melting chamber
  • Saving in steam consumption, against a small power load
  • This system consumes only about 30 kw of power for a 5000 TCD plant
  • This system not only makes the SO2 production independent of steam production from the main boilers, but also results in a comparatively low consumption of power, as all the radiation and condensation heat losses during transportation of 7 Kg/cm2 steam are eliminated

In the Film type Sulphur Burner, sulphur is required to be melted and then pumped into the furnace and burnt to generate Sulphur dioxide. Melting of sulphur is achieved by using heating coils that have steam at 7 Kg/cm2 circulating inside the coils.

At present high pressure steam at 8 Kg/cm2 has to be bled from the turbine or from the boiler PRDS system and brought over long distance to the Film type Sulphur Burner through pipelines. For a 5000 TCD plant, while transporting about 1200 Kg of steam per hour for this purpose a lot of energy is lost due to radiation and condensation. The existing system suffers from a handicap during the start-up of the factory when the steam supply is erratic and because of which, during this period there is a problem in operating the Film type Sulphur Burner.

To obviate the above problems and avoid the high heat losses in the steam required for melting of sulphur for the Film type Sulphur Burner, a more energy-efficient system, utilizing electrical energy along with a hot water system, has been developed by Digital Utilities.
